The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission awarded two grants totaling $850,000 to boost nuclear engineering education, research, and workforce development at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

A new six-year, $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will allow researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to investigate how different civil infrastructures within a city or county – such as roadways, water and power utilities, hospitals, banks, or law enforcement – interact with each other and with the natural environment after a disaster.

Ravi S. Kane, professor of chemical and biological engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has won the 2008 Young Investigator Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers’ Nanoscale Science and Engineering Forum.

A fluids mechanics professor at Rensselaer is using experimental flow measurement techniques to help American swimmers sharpen their strokes, shave seconds from their lap times, and race toward a gold medal in Beijing this summer.

Barbara Ruel, Director, Women in Engineering & Diversity, has been appointed to serve a two year term on Women in Engineering Pro Active Network (WEPAN) Board of Directors as Director of Membership.

Co-author Dr. Michael Shur with K. Fobelets (lead), S. Rumyantsev, W. Van Roy, and R. Vanheertum received the Best Reliability Paper Award at the 26th International Conference on Microelectronics (MIEL 2008). They received the award for their paper: Correlation Between Flicker Noise and Current Linearity in Ferromagnetic-GaAs-metal Tunnel Contacts.

A new technique for growing single-crystal nanorods and controlling their shape using biomolecules could enable the development of smaller, more powerful heat pumps and devices that harvest electricity from heat.


Troy, N.Y. - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has received a gift of $1 million to establish the Paula and Jeffrey R. Gural '64 Scholarship for undergraduate students in civil engineering. The endowment supports the $1.4 billion Renaissance at Rensselaer: The Campaign for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Three Rensselaer students will be working at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for the summer as interns in some of the most competitive science and engineering programs in the nation.
